Ethiopian Business Review

Ethiopia has a long tradition of creating artistic works that critique society and politics. One such artistic work currently on stage, is Festalen, widely known among the public after the character–Eyayu Fungus. The one-man-show has been wowing audiences since its debut in 2014. EBR’s adjunct writer Meseret Mamo attended the show at the Ethiopian Academy of Sciences on December 16.

A marching band constitutes a group of musicians that perform while marching. It is common to see March bands adding the element of entertainment in different occasions. Most marching bands have attractive uniforms often of a military style. Instrument typically incorporated in a marching band includes brass, woodwind and percussion. In Ethiopia, marching bands have a history of more than 75 years.. The Defense and Federal Police March bands are the most known in the country. EBR’s Hiwot Selalew consulted professionals and documents to offer this report.

Known as one of the pioneer female painters in Ethiopia, Desta Hagos has been an inspiration to many young women with the desire to pursue their dream of becoming artists. She fell in love with painting and drawing at a very young age. At the age of 18 she became the first female visual arts student to graduate from the then Addis Ababa School of Fine Arts and Design. Taught and mentored under the famous Gebre-Kristos Desta, she has over the years earned a name as one of the most distinguished painters in Ethiopian history. She has more than 50 solo and group exhibitions and numerous honors and recognitions. EBR’s Hiwot Selalew talked to Desta about her life and career.
